Liverpool: My Favourite XI

I’ve been watching and supporting Liverpool for quite some time now. During that time, Liverpool achieved some of its best achievements ever, but also some of the worst.

Here’s a list of the 11 best players that I’ve watched, who played for Liverpool. The team is lined up in a 4-3-3 formation.

Goalkeeper: Pepe Reina

Arguably the best goalkeeper in Liverpool history. The Spaniard has great instinct, great control of his area and is the best goalkeeper in the world in creating chances.

He has been a consistent performer in every season he played for Liverpool, and is a great personality to have in the dressing room.

Right Back: Steve Finnan

One of the best right backs I have ever seen play. Finnan was a great player to have on the right flank, and alongside the other three players I’ve named below, created one of the strongest backlines in football back then. His defending skills were better than any other Liverpool right back I ever saw, while his attacking skills were quite solid too.

I still believe playing Arbeloa instead of Finnan and offering the latter as makeweight in the proposed Barry deal was a huge mistake by Rafa.

Centre backs: Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia

Is there even a need to say why I chose them? While there were/are better players than them in a Liverpool shirt, these two are living legends of the club.

Left back: John Arne Riise

One of the most problematic positions for Liverpool in recent seasons. It’s fair to say that Liverpool never really replaced Riise. Although he was at fault for some terrible defensive mistakes, his performances for the club were brilliant.

Defensive midfielder: Javier Mascherano

A hard choice to make, but I choose Masch instead of Hamann because he linked brilliantly with Xabi Alonso in defensive midfield.

Although the way he left the club didn’t sit well with the Liverpool fans, it can’t be denied that he was a world class defensive midfielder at Liverpool, especially in 08/09.

Playmaker: Xabi Alonso

Another one from the 08/09 midfield. During his time at Anfield, Alonso became a fan favourite, which he still is. His performances were excellent, and his passing was out of this world. He was part of the best midfield for the Reds that I’ve witnessed alongside Mascherano and Gerrard.

Attacking midfielder: Steven Gerrard

Captain Fantastic, best Liverpool player in decades, and one of the biggest football legends ever.

Striker: Robbie Fowler

God!

Striker: Fernando Torres

If Fowler is God, there is a name from the Bible suitable for Torres too. Although he left in a bad manner, it can’t be denied he was a brilliant player at Liverpool.

His pace and eye for goal were unmatched back then. He is also the fastest Liverpool player ever to score 50 goals.

Striker: Michael Owen

Another player not liked by the Liverpool faithful. He was a brilliant player at Liverpool, but ruined his legacy by moving to Manchester United. What a shame!
