Liverpool forward Mario Balotelli has found himself in trouble once again after posting an image on his Instagram page that evoked allegations of racism and anti-semitism. This isn’t the first time that he has found himself in the middle of a controversy. The former Manchester City striker has himself been subjected to racial jibes in the past. He was bought by the Anfield-based club earlier this year from AC Milan for a sum of £16 million.
The Football Association (FA) have decided to conduct an investigation into the matter. The 24-year-old was criticized severely for posting the particular image and later posted a tweet, saying that his mother was Jewish. In another tweet, the Italian called it “an unlucky moment” but it does look unlikely that the FA would spare him.
A spokesperson of Liverpool Football Club said that they would speak to Balotelli and the tweet has been deleted.
“We are aware of the posting which has since been promptly deleted by the player. We will be speaking to the player about the issue." he said.
Former FA executive and current chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council, Simon Johnson said Balotelli should face action.
"We abhor all forms of racism, wherever it is found. We call upon the FA to investigate this offensive social media post and to take action if appropriate if we are to succeed in kicking racism out of football," he said.
However, the Italian has sent in an apology for posting the image.
