Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina declared on Saturday that the arrival of Simon Mignolet at Anfield would not affect his position at the Premier League club.
Reports in the British media claim Liverpool have agreed a £9 million ($13.9 million, 10.6 million euros) fee with Sunderland for 24-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mignolet, prompting speculation Reina could decide to leave.
Spain international Reina, 30, has been linked with a return to his formative club Barcelona, but he says he is determined to stay at Liverpool and fight for his place.
Asked how Mignolet’s arrival would change his situation at Liverpool, he replied: “It hasn’t changed a bit. I’ve said it many times: I’m very comfortable and very happy at Liverpool.
“Every team needs competition, and when it’s a positive one, it’s more than welcome. If it’s finally done, I’m here to welcome him. Anything he needs, I’m here.”
Reina was speaking at a press conference in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza, where Spain are preparing for their final Confederations Cup group game against Nigeria on Sunday.
