For the past few days London is making the headlines in all the leading dailies for the wrong reasons.
Rioters have flooded the city looting shops, burning cars, buildings, shops and vandalising the city’s infrastructure.
Young thugs saw this as an opportunity, and are spreading the riots for no real reason , except for personal gain. These Thugs include teenagers and local gangs. The police force is all over the city trying to combat the rebelling youth gangs.
The riots are now spreading throughout Britain, with Liverpool and Manchester being the latest victims.
While these nonsense riots are spreading, Premier League bosses are concerned about the games, particularly in London. Three games to be played during the weekend at QPR, Fulham and Tottenham might be postponed. The reason being the security concern for the fans attending these matches.
While many fixtures are already postponed/Canceled including Carling Cup fixtures and a friendly to be played at Wembley between England and Holland, some games from the Premier League might get affected.
Tottenham players have showed concern and support to the Premier League and The FA. Younes Kaboul was quoted: “It would be preferable to postpone the match for the sake of fans’ safety”
However, some players are hopeful that the riots will come to an end and the matches must go on as scheduled. The main reason behind this is, a postponed match would be sandwiched in already hectic schedule in future and it would take a toll on players’ fatigue later. And some players do not like the idea of the very first match of the new campaign getting postponed.
Tottenham defender, Assou-Ekotto was quoted: “I hope the match against Everton goes ahead. The season is busy enough as it is. If we don’t play the first match, it will mean playing two games in a week. We play enough of those in England. I hope sport will calm things down.”
Not only the players, but the fans are also hopeful that the show must go on after a long wait for the new campaign.
The Premier League Ofiicials have scheduled a meeting on Thursday to decide the fate of the London matches according to the intensity of riots and security. A review of the situation will decide whether the matches will be played or not. Watch this space for the outcome of the meeting.
Let’s hope the riots Cease and London gets back to normal, so that Football and other activities go on peacefully.
