Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has reiterated his belief that football is about winning and that he will pick the players and the system that he believes will give his side the best chance of winning.
Speaking to journalists after the Netherland’s 2-0 victory over Chile, Van Gaal was in a playful mood, taking on the reporters’ questions and throwing them back in their faces.
One journalist decided to ask Van Gaal about criticisms levelled at his side saying that they play defensive football to which the experienced manager replied “You tell me your definition of attacking, since it’s such a clever Q,
“You just have to play according to your strengths… it’s all about winning. I’ll pick a system that helps me win.
“This is proof of the pudding. We’re not giving away very much, but we’re creating a lot.
“If I didn’t do that, you’d chop off my head. And, by the way, I played like this with AZ and won the championship.
“Me and my staff, we only ever want to score one goal more than the opponents.”
The Netherlands have often been associated with Total Football but Van Gaal’s quotes give off the aura of a man more interested the ends rather than the means.
However so far in this tournament the Netherlands have been one of the best teams to watch and no side has scored more goals than them.
The new Manchester United manager also said that he does not believe that his new role has had any effect on either him or his team, insisting that everyone involved is focused on the World Cup and nothing else.
“If I played 4-3-3 against Chile, Robben would have had to run after them. They can’t do that for 90 minutes.”
“I’m asking you now… if you’re asking me questions, I’m asking you questions now.”
“I think Manchester United has nothing to do with this and, if you look at my CV, I win a lot of matches.”
