Louis Van Gaal’s team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday courtesy of goals from his side’s attacking trio – Memphis Depay, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney. Manchester United are now back at the top of the Premier League table, after 110 weeks and the Dutchman was delighted with the result, according to Metro.
It has been a long wait for the Old Trafford faithful who has been so used to seeing their team destroying other Premier League sides during the successful Ferguson era. But ever since the Scotsman’s departure, Untied have gone through a rollercoaster ride with former manager David Moyes and Van Gaal, who still hasn’t fully earned the trust of the supporters.
Now that the team has finally begun to form into a stronger unit and has been picking up good results in recent matches, the Dutchman, often so abrasive, has taken a time out to joke with a security guard after the game and has admitted that he was proud of the achievement.
“Of course, of course.” LVG was quoted in Manchester Evening News.
“I said to the security guy: ‘You are now a security guy of a club that [is] top of the league’ and that makes a huge difference.’ Also for him. He is proud and I am proud.”
He further added: “Last week it was the first time I was second. He was smiling.”
It’s still at the early stages of the season and United boss, Van Gaal has refused to get carried away by their current position despite his side’s tremendous rise in the league.
"I know exactly where I stand," he added.
"I have said it before and six weeks ago and the same answers. We have a good team, but we can win and lose.”
"Last season you asked: ‘Can you manage in England?’ I said I needed time and it’s the same."
Departure of players helped United’s Premier League rise: Van Gaal
Over the past two seasons, Manchester United have seen many of their key players depart the club including the likes of Robin Van Persie, Javier Hernandez, Jonny Evans, Angel di Maria and Rafael da Silva to name a few.
Louis Van Gaal made sure he brought in quality players to replace the departed players and he has done it with the signings of Depay, Schweinsteiger, Schnederlin and Martial. The former Bayern Munich coach has admitted that United’s rise in the league has been partly because of the departure of some of the old players, ESPN reports.
"You need luck, but the balance of the team is better than last season.” Van Gaal told the reporter.
"Because of that we need to win our games. We shall improve every week, yes. I don't see it every week, but see that we are better as a team and a selection.”
"I rotate more now because I can. Last year, in my opinion, I didn't have the balance. I have let 20 or 25 players go. So it's a new team."
