The centre-back started his career with Inter Milan, captaining the under-20 sides with occasional call-ups from the first team. Half of his registration rights were sold to Cesena as part of the deal that brought defender Yuto Nagatomoto the San Siro in January 2011.
In June 2012, the co-ownership deal was renewed and Caldirola reported to Cesena. He played the first half of the season for Cesena and was loaned to Brescia in January for the rest of the season.
Bremen’s director of sport Thomas Eichin welcomed the new signing. “In spite of his young age he has plenty of experience. He is captain of Italy’s Under-21s and has proven his leadership qualities at his previous clubs. We saw at the Under-21 Championships that he has lots of potential. He has a fine technique and a good eye, and he is very creative in opening up play too”.
Caldirola has represented his native country of Italy at all youth levels, from under-16 to under-21. He captained the Azzurini in the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
“Werder Bremen is a big chance for me,” Caldirola said. “As soon as my agent told me of Bremen’s interest, I said I wanted to join them straight away. They’re a club with a great tradition and I’m looking forward to the coming years.”
