After Barcelona defeated Juventus 3-1 in the Champions League final to complete a historic second treble, coach Luis Enrique has not confirmed whether he will continue to manage the club next season. Enrique accomplished what Pep Guardiola did by winning the treble in his first season as coach after taking over from Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino last summer.
There were a few turbulent moments midway through the season and reports suggested that he would be sacked due to player unrest and a supposed tiff with Barca’s star forward Lionel Messi. But soon after, the Catalan club turned their season around to overhaul Real Madrid in the title race to win La Liga, beat Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final and finished it off with last night’s win against Juventus.
Don’t know if I will be in charge of Barcelona next season: Enrique
When Enrique was questioned about his future at the club and whether he would be in the hot seat next season, he said: “No, the truth is I don't, but I'm happy at the moment. My challenge is to enjoy the moment and enjoy a good summer.
The time will come when decisions have to be made. It has been a difficult year, a year of transition, but I have to thank all the people who trusted me and thought I was the best person to lead Barcelona with my staff.”
Barcelona finished the 2014/15 season with a phenomenal record of only six losses in 60 games and Enrique was quick to point that out.
The 45-year-old manager said: “I have zero interest in the people who criticized me. We have had six defeats and four draws in 60 matches, one of the best seasons we have ever had at Barcelona.
“Without a doubt the best club in Europe has been Barcelona over the last 10 years.”
Hope Enrique continues at Barcelona: Iniesta
Barcelona’s captain for the night and the man of the match in the Champions League final Andres Iniesta also hoped Enrique would stay on another year.
The 31-year-old midfielder said: “He's our coach and our leader and I hope he will continue with us next year - he has not said anything to the contrary.
“It has been a spectacular season in every sense of the word and this has been a spectacular day for all of us.”
Xavi also had his say on Enrique: “Luis Enrique deserves this because he's had a lot of criticism, but he's been a great leader for the side. The best thing for next year is for Luis Enrique to stay.”
