Luis Figo believes Cristiano Ronaldo could emulate him and make a sensational transfer between the two Spanish rivals. The legendary Portuguese winger made a controversial move from Barcelona to Real Madrid for a then world record fee of £37 million ($62 million).
Figo received a lot of hate from the Barcelona fans with the fans even throwing a pig’s head at Figo during a famous El Clasico clash at Camp Nou. However, Figo believes that anything is possible in the current market. Speaking to Record, Figo said:
“We are in a free market, If there is a termination clause, anything can happen.”
Figo also spoke about his own shocking move to Real Madrid. The Portuguese legend was a revered figure at Barcelona, and it came as a huge surprise when he decided to swap Barcelona for Real Madrid.
“The first reason was for Real was the recognition by the president of Real Madrid. So things were getting more serious and I received the offer and I reported it [to Barcelona] with a view to improving my contract.”
The move, however, went ahead with Barcelona receiving a world record transfer fee.
Cristiano Ronaldo praises Zidane’s impact as a coach
Figo might have suggested a ludicrous transfer to Barcelona, but Ronaldo himself seemed happy at Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo had a very successful season last year, winning the Champions League and Euros with Real Madrid and Portugal respectively. The Portuguese superstar also finished as the top scorer in the Champions League.
Speaking to UEFA, Ronaldo spoke about last season and how he felt when taking the decisive penalty against Atletico Madrid in the final:
"We managed to win the Champions League and I was top scorer in the competition. It was possibly one of the best season's of my career".Speaking about the winning penalty, Ronaldo said:"My heart was pounding as I stepped up to take it as I knew that it could be the decisive kick. At the same time I was confident of scoring and helping Real Madrid to their eleventh European Cup".
The three-time Ballon d’Or also heaped praise on Zidane and his tactics. He spoke about his delight at having Zidane as the manager:
"Zidane was key last season for us. After his arrival he made us work harder and more efficiently. He's a great professional and an excellent person. In my opinion, the tranquility he transmits to the players is one of his key strengths. What coach wins the Champions League just six months after taking over a team? Zidane deserves a huge amount of credit and I'm delighted he's with us".
