In a big blow to Arsenal, Arsene Wenger’s top target Brazilian international Luiz Gustavo, who was linked with Napoli as well, has joined Wolfsburg from Bayern Munich for a fee reported to be around €20 million, according to ESPN.
The 26-year-old Gustavo has agreed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga side as part of his search for securing first-team football ahead of next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
The former Bayern Munich star had been strongly linked with Arsenal for past few days but Gustavo has opted to remain in Germany instead.
Following the arrivals of Mario Goetze and Thiago Alcantara, Gustavo’s place at Bayern Munich was under threat, leading to speculation over his future.
Bayern signed Gustavo from Hoffenheim in 2011 and was a key figure in a historic Treble winning team last season.
Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs said told Bild, “We are delighted that we have Luiz with us.”
