Croatia have an injury scare over Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, with coach Niko Kovac revealing that the 28-year-old has had to go to hospital with a foot injury.
Modric, who is now reportedly being targeted by Chelsea, played the full 90 minutes of Croatia’s 3-1 defeat to Brazil on Thursday, but suffered a foot injury that has threatened his participation in the rest of the tournament.
It is still too early to know how long he will be missing for, with further tests still to be ran on the Real Madrid central midfield player, but the knock has rubbed further salt into the wounds of the opening day defeat, which saw the Croatian’s lose to a controversial Neymar penalty.
Kovac admitted that should the injury rule Modric out of any matches then it would be a “huge blow” for a team that is built around the central midfield partnership between Modric and Ivan Rakitic.
Croatia face Cameroon on Wednesday, knowing that a defeat would all but end their hopes of qualification, with Kovac admitting that he does not know if Modric will be able to feature.
“Luka is in Salvador and our doctors are with him in the hospital,” confirmed the Croatia coach.
“He has to go though some exams and then we will see how serious it is.
“God forbid that something serious happens to him. That would be a huge blow for us.”
