After Andre Villas-Boas took over as manager at Spurs, their Croatian midfielder Luka Modric’s fate is still hanging in balance. In a press conference, the former Chelsea manager revealed that the Croatian wants to leave Tottenham and discussions are continuing with ‘various interested clubs’ .
Modric was a star performer for Spurs since he moved to the White Hart Lane in 2008. But this summer he has been linked with different clubs, especially with Spanish giant Real Madrid, who offered €44.4 million for Modric.
Last season, when Villas-Boas was Chelsea manager, he made a number of offers for this Croatian playmaker, but each time their offers were turned down by the then Spurs manager, Harry Redknapp. Now it seems that the man who wanted him so desperately, will be taking the charge of his release.
As Tottenham’s moderate performance in the last couple of seasons (in EPL – fourth, fifth and fourth in last three seasons) was not enough to grab any premier league title or champions league, former manager Harry Redknapp was sacked from his position last month. Villas-Boas then took charge. He knows that he is under pressure because Tottenham have made large investments to secure Champions League and EPL glory. However the Portuguese manager believes that his side can challenge premier league favorites like Man Utd and Man City. Though it now appears that Villas-Boas may have to achieve his goals without Modric.
In the meanwhile, Jan Vertonghen and Gylfi Sigurdsson have recently signed for the North London club and Joao Moutinho, who has previously worked with Villas-Boas at FC Porto, has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Modric after impressing for Portugal at Euro 2012.
