Facing the prospect of missing their captain and custodian Iker Casillas for upto 12 weeks after surgery on Friday due to a broken thumb that he had suffered in their game against Valencia in the Copa del Rey, Real Madrid were forced into making a move in the transfer market.
Los Blancos agreed to a deal that would bring goalkeeper Diego Lopez to the Santiago Bernabéu on a four-and a-half year deal. Madrid agreed upon a fee believed to be in the region of €4m with Sevilla for the services of Lopez, who makes a return to the team after coming through the youth system after initially joining as an 18-year-old in 2000.
A statement on Real Madrid’s website read: “Real Madrid and Sevilla have reached an agreement for the transfer of Diego Lopez, who will join the club until the end of the 2016/17 season.”
The 31-year-old joined Sevilla earlier this season from Villarreal after the yellow submarine suffered relegation last season and would provide Antonio Adán stiff competition.
