Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed that striker Wayne Rooney is a doubt for Saturday’s game against West Ham United with a groin injury. The former Everton forward missed United’s 2-0 Capital One cup quarter final victory over Stoke City with the injury and Moyes revealed in his post match press conference that Rooney is a doubt for Saturday’s game, but is not set to be out for the long term.
When asked about the injury to his striker, Moyes replied: “Rooney has got a groin strain”.
With fellow forward Robin Van Persie also missing through injury it was left to Danny Welbeck to lead the line against Stoke. Goals from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra proved to be enough to see the Old Trafford side through to the competition’s semi final’s, but injury doubts over his star forwards are likely to concern Moyes ahead of the busy festive period.
However whilst Van Persie is out until the New Year, Moyes has revealed that Rooney’s injury is not as serious as the Dutchman’s. Upon being posed the question as to whether Rooney will recover in time to face the Hammers at the weekend, Moyes simply replied:
“He’s got a chance”.
Rooney has scored eight goals and provided six assists in the Premier League so far this season, whilst his fellow striker Robin Van Persie has scored seven goals and contributed two assists.
Rooney has created 29 chances in the league this season – 11 more than the next most productive United player, Patrice Evra.
