What's the story?
According to ESPN, Manchester United's board are delaying the new £90 million deal for David De Gea because of the agents' fees which are driving up the price of the deal. The new long term contract would see the Spaniard earn a whopping £350,000-a-week which would put him alongside the best-paid players in the league including Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.
In case you didn't know
De Gea signed for United in 2011 replacing the former goalkeeper and club legend, Edwin Van der Sar at Old Trafford. The Spaniard found it hard in his early days but gradually settled down to become one of the best in the world.
De Gea has been the recipient of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the year award on three consecutive years which was a record in the club's history. His trophy cabinet also includes a Premier League, a FA Cup, a League Cup, and a Europa League.
The heart of the matter
There were speculations that Alexis Sanchez's weekly wage of £400,000 caused a conflict among some of the players including De Gea. Moreover, De Gea was skeptical about United's chances to win major silverware under Jose Mourinho and believed to be considering an exit at the end of the season.
However, United couldn't afford to lose their talismanic goalkeeper for free and thus triggered the additional one year option in his contract which is scheduled to run out at the end of 2019-20 campaign. Given his importance to the side, the United board agreed to a new £90 million deal for five years, but now the agents' fees are causing a delay in finalizing the contract.
Rumor Rating - 8/10
With such a huge amount involved in the deal, it's evident that the agents' would try to earn as much as possible from it and the reliability of ESPN somewhat guarantees the authenticity of this report.
