David Moyes is set to face the inevitable wrath of the Manchester United hierarchy, as the Scotsman looks set to be sacked by the club after a dismal season.
Moyes is reportedly set to be relieved of his position, so here are five managers who could replace ‘The Chosen One’ next season.
5. Antonio Conte – Juventus
The former Juventus midfielder is now seen as a hero on the streets of Turin. Since taking over at the troubled Italian club, he has led the Old Lady to continuous success on the domestic front. He has won back-to-back Serie A titles with Juventus and is set to complete a third this season.
Conte has also won back-to-back Italian Super Cups, as well as having won Serie A Manager of the Year twice in a row. His lack of triumphs in Europe may count against him, though, as United will look for someone who can get them that fourth European trophy.
4. Ryan Giggs – Manchester United (Player/Coach)
He knows the club inside out and is currently on the coaching books at Old Trafford. He is working alongside Moyes and perhaps with the Scotsman’s departure, United will look for someone who knows his way around. Giggs’ only coaching experience is this season, but the Welshman lives and breathes United red, so could be an option for the board to look at.
3. Gary Neville – Pundit/England Coach
Gary Neville is a hero in Salford and is loved by many at the Theatre of Dreams. Working as a pundit on Sky Sports for the last couple of seasons, his knowledge of the game is evident. A passion for football and everything tactical, Neville could be an option for the board to consider. He lacks managerial experience and will busy this summer as the Three Lions prepare for the World Cup in Brazil, which means time would be limited for him to get the squad up and running.
2. Louis van Gaal – Netherlands (to leave after World Cup)
Dutchman Louis van Gaal will be available in the summer after confirming he is to leave his post as manager of the Netherlands following the conclusion of the World Cup. The Dutchman has been heavily linked with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, however, he is reportedly more ambitious and would consider an offer from a bigger club.
Van Gaal has a vast amount of experience across a number of countries. The Dutchman won the Eredivisie three times, the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup, all with Ajax. He also had success in Spain with Barcelona, winning the La Liga twice, the Copa del Rey and UEFA Super Cup. He won another Eredivisie title, with AZ Alkmaar this time, and then dominated Germany by winning a Bundesliga title, along with a DFB-Pokal Cup and a DFB-Supercup.
He has the same problem however as Gary Neville. He will take his Holland side to the World Cup, meaning time could be a problem as the United squad will need bolstering as soon as the season ends.
1. Jurgen Klopp – Borussia Dortmund
Klopp is the front-runner for this job and you can see why. The young, enthusiastic, exciting and sometimes rather eccentric German, has been a cult figure in Germany as he has changed the fortunes of Dortmund. The German side finished 13th before Klopp took over in 2008, but he has since led them to brilliant success.
He led the club to successive Bundesliga titles and broke numerous records. The 81 points accumulated by Dortmund in the 2011-12 season was the greatest points tally ever amassed in Bundesliga history and the 47 points earned in the second half of the season also set a new record. Klopp then made Borussia Dortmund history by sealing the club’s first ever domestic double, winning the DFB-Pokal Cup.
Klopp took his side to the Champions League final last season, but was beaten by rivals Bayern Munich. Although Dortmund have disappointed this season, Klopp’s exciting brand of football and energetic presence, along with the fact he is just 46-years-old, makes him the favourite for this position.
