#3 Poor Monchengladbach fail to turn up
Borussia Monchengladbach impressively finished second in a Champions League group also containing Real Madrid and Inter Milan. They had led the way heading into the final day, but a 2-0 loss in the Spanish capital saw them settle for second spot.
This saw them draw Manchester City in the Round of 16. Despite being some way off the standards of the English giants, it was expected that Marco Rose's side will give them a run for their money.
That was, however, not the case, as a dominant Manchester City controlled proceedings across both legs.
If anything, a 4-0 aggregate defeat flattered the Germans and on another day, they could have been embarrassed in a more emphatic defeat.
#2 Riyad Mahrez forgets his shooting boots
Riyad Mahrez has been in fine form for Manchester City, and this has seen him become an integral player for Pep Guardiola in recent weeks.
Having scored a brace in the 4-1 victory over Southampton last week, the Algeria international was handed a rest at the weekend ostensibly to be fresh for the 'visit' of Monchengladbach.
The former Leicester City man was bright throughout the game and constantly put the opposition defense on the backfoot.
He was full of intelligent running, which meant that the likes of De Bruyne and Phil Foden constantly found him in threatening spaces.
However, the one thing that was missing from the Manchester City man was his normally accurate finish.
Mahrez found himself in his favorite position down the right flank on several occasions. Having cut onto his stronger foot, it was expected that he would curl the ball into the top corner as he has done on countless occasions.
His shooting was, however, uncharacteristically off, with no fewer than four good chances going begging.
With a marquee clash at Goodison Park coming this weekend, Mahrez will be keen to get back on track and forget what was a disappointing performance against Monchengladbach.
#1 Impressive Kevin de Bruyne dictates proceedings yet again for Manchester City
Kevin De Bruyne is unarguably the most important player for Manchester City. Having returned to full fitness a month ago, he has gone about highlighting why he is so integral to Pep Guardiola.
The Belgian playmaker was among the players who were handed rest at the weekend. Fortunately, he was back to his domineering best against Monchengladbach and controlled proceedings from the middle effortlessly.
The precision needed for the opening goal was testament to De Bruyne's brilliance, while the fact that it came from his weaker foot added to the goal's allure.
In addition to his opener, the Manchester City number 14 made a game-high three key passes and had a 100% shooting accuracy on the night.
He should also have gotten his requisite assist but Mahrez and Sterling somehow missed gilt-edged chances, with the latter's miss coming from six yards in front of an empty net.
