Premier League 2018-19: Can Manchester City dare to dream of the quadruple?

Johan Cryuff's footballing philosophy took Europe by storm in the late 20th century. The same footballing philosophy, mastered by one of his students, Pep Guardiola, is now taking Manchester City to new heights.

At the beginning of the 2016-2017 season, the Citizens had high hopes on Guardiola to deliver, but he failed to impress. The same season Manchester United appointed Jose Mourinho, and football fans all around the globed dubbed the Premier League season as Guardiola vs Mourinho.

But in the end it was Antonio Conte who came out on top as Chelsea won the league.

Manchester City were eliminated by AS Monaco in the Round of 16 clash of the Champions League; the tie ended 6-6 but Monaco had the better away goal numbers. They were also dumped out by Arsenal in the semifinals of the FA Cup as they lost 2-1 in extra time. And Manchester United handed them a loss in the fourth round tie of the Carabao Cup as they lost 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Fast forward to the 2017-2018 season, which has seen massive changes made by Guardiola in the squad. The likes of Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy, Danilo, Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva and Ederson came into the club. The likes of Eliaquim Mangala, Samir Nasri, Aleksandar Kolarov, Joe Hart, Nolito and Pablo Zabaleta left the club.

Manchester City took the Premier League by storm as they set record after record. They got the most points (100), most wins (32), most goals (106), most away wins (16), biggest positive goal difference (79), biggest title-winning margin (19) and least time trailing (153 minutes).

However, they couldn't go farther than the quarterfinals in the Champions League as they were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Liverpool. They also lost to Wigan Athletic in the fourth round of the FA Cup by the margin of 1-0.

They did win the Carabao Cup though, beating Arsenal 3-0 in the final.

We are now at the business end of the 2018-19 season. As things stand Manchester City are only one point behind Liverpool in the Premier League, and there are 10 games left to play. City are also in the running for the Champions League title as they are in the last 16 with a 3-2 aggregate lead over Schalke 04 ahead of the second leg tie in March.

They face Swansea City in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, and they have already won the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea - beating them 4-3 on penalties.

Can Manchester City win all the possible titles they are competing in? Will Guardiola repeat the same feat with City as he did with FC Barcelona in 2009? We can only wait and watch.
