According to the Daily Star, Manchester City will be looking to lure Rio Ferdinand away from Old Trafford in the summer as the defender’s contract is all set to expire in 12 months.

The Manchester United defender has been linked with a move to City owned Major League Soccer franchise New York City. Ferdinand is highly touted to end his illustrious career in the US with many clubs in the scene to snatch the veteran. Miami has also arrived as a favorite destination for Ferdinand as his former teammate David Beckham is pulling the strings to set up a franchise of his own.

The MLS clubs are allowed to have two flagship players in the team to promote the status of the competition and the Manchester City sources have confirmed that the club will leave no mistakes in making full use of the opportunity.

“It is absolutely certain that the club will sign two really big names to launch the franchise. Big is the operative word, too, because everything about New York is big, exciting and glamorous,” a Manchester City source said.

The new franchise has already secured the services of former City player Claudio Reyna as the director of football and will be looking to lure some more big names to work in the background before moving for the flagship players.
