It was a tough Sunday for the Citizens, as they were visitors at the Emirates Stadium, playing against the Gunners. However, after almost 34 years, Manchester City were able to beat Arsenal at their home ground.
It was not easy for Mancini’s men to win the match, as their star striker Sergio Aguero was out of action due to injury. On the other hand, Arsenal were also struggling, as in the 10th minute only, their centre-back, Laurent Koscielny, got a straight red card for hauling down Edin Dzeko in the penalty box. Arsenal maintained their record of saving penalties against Manchester City, saving this one too by Edin Dzeko.
But this was not the end, as James Milner found the net in the 21st minute, assisted by Carlos Tevez. David Silva took a quick free kick which fell for the Argentine, who in turn gave a delicate pass to the Englishman, who scored the opening goal and gave the visitors a lead. The second and final goal of the match came from Edin Dzeko in the 32nd minute, when Milner whipped in an excellent low cross from the right and the forward was on hand to tap in his 10th league goal of the season after Szczesny saved the initial effort by Tevez.
Many chances were created by Arsenal too. Walcott and Cazorla all took efforts to take a point out of City’s clutches, but in vain. They showed a great fighting spirit in the second half, and were given hope in the 75th minute when Kompany was dismissed for a two-footed lunge on Wilshere. The Belgian clearly won the ball, but Dean took action, ruling that the tackle was dangerous. However, the FA has removed the ban on Kompany now, and he can start in his next match against Fulham.
It made little difference, as City saw out the result to repay the travelling fans and keep the pressure on United. They are currently in 2nd place, 7 points behind their city rivals Manchester United.
After almost 34 years, Manchester City won their first match away at Arsenal. Manchester City were the favourites to win this game after their fine displays in recent matches. Roberto Mancini’s side will now look forward to their next match against Fulham, who are currently in 13th position. They have to win this match too, if they want to keep their hopes of defending their title alive. With the likes of Berbatov, Bryan Ruiz, Hugo Rodallega, Sidwell and Riise, the visitors can prove to be a handful.
