Manchester City’s players and coaching staff have made a remarkable gesture of donating their salary to help reduce the cost of away tickets for fans.
The Manchester Evening News has reported that all members of Manuel Pellegrini’s squad and coaching staff have shelled out approximately £1,000 each, so that the club can offer tickets to away games at half the price.
The move is part of a wider Premier League initiative to reduce the cost of away games, with every Premier League club setting aside almost £200,000 to improve match experiences for away fans.
On Tuesday, Manchester United had announced that they were going to be reducing the cost of their away games by £4, starting with the Fulham game on 2 November.
Tom Glick, chief commercial and operating officer, said: “Manchester City fans are famous for their fiercely loyal and vocal support. They have stuck with the club through thick and thin for generations, and both the club and players want to say thank you.”
Vincent Kompany, the captain who is currently sidelined due to injury, told the Manchester Evening News: “In my opinion, our away support is the best in the Premier League and we never take that for granted.
“Win, lose or draw, City supporters can always be heard throughout our games and I just hope that this initiative proves just how much we value this incredible support on the road.”
