Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany called for more attention to help poor children by providing them a proper livelihood and education environment.

Kompany made the appeal at the opening ceremony of Hong Kong Friends of SOS Children’s Village on Thursday. He is with his team here to attend the 2013 Barclays Asia Trophy football tournament, reports Xinhua.

Manchester City, who announced a long-term partnership with the SOS Children’s Village last July, not only attracted large amount of volunteers, but also made contributions to the construction of new SOS villages.

“The first time for me to get involved in this charity program was 10 years ago. They invited me to visit Congo and I was stunned by their living conditions. It made me decide to help those children,” said the 27-year-old Belgian defender.

After visiting some undeveloped areas in Hong Kong, Kompany called for better education and more care to children of poor families.

“People should visit those places and see what those children are doing and needs,” said Kompany.
