Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, 27, expects to return to action in no time after he had to be withdrawn in the 71st minute due to a groin injury as his side thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 in their opening game of the 2013/14 Premier League season.
The Belgian tweeted the following messageafter the game:
“Team was great, I felt great.
“Injury is a blow after all the hard work. I’ll be back to that level in no time. Thanks for all the support!”
City will be hoping for a swift recovery as they are a little short in the centre-back department following the departure of Kolo Toure to Liverpool and the injury suffered by Matija Nastasic.
Micah Richards also sat out Monday’s match, so midfielder Javi Garcia found himself at centre-back when he replaced Kompany.
Dedryk Boyata is the only other option at the moment, but he hardly ever featured under previous manager Roberto Mancini.
Nastasic is expected to rejoin first team training this week, and should be an option for the match against Cardiff on Sunday.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini admitted after the match that he would have to monitor Kompany’s progress carefully, saying: “We’ll see during the week with Vincent Kompany exactly what he has.
“We will see what the best thing is that we must do.”
