Manchester United
David De Gea: 8/10
De Gea made three important saves on the night. He saved Romeu's low drive, partied away Ward-Prowse's effort and thwarted Long's shot with his feet.
Ashley Young: 7/10
The full-back was a threat on the right-flank and bombarded forward on every possible occasion. Though he lacked a cutting edge in the final edge, Young was one of United's better performers on the night.
Victor Lindelof: 5/10
The Swede looked nervous on a couple of occasions against the pace of Shane Long and is still not accustomed to the needs of the Premier League. But he distributed the ball well and kept things moving along nicely.
Phil Jones: 6/10
Jones played a leader's role in United's backline and thwarted a number of Southampton's counter-attacking moves. He kept Dusan Tadic in check and proved to be a reliable player for Jose Mourinho.
Luke Shaw: 6/10
The much-criticised left back is slowly but surely getting back in the mix of things for United as he delivered yet another satisfactory performance. Shaw did his defensive duties well and surged forward on the left wing when possible. But just as Young, the left back lacked any end product to his crosses.
Nemanja Matic: 4/10
It was a performance which screamed that Matic needs a rest as soon as possible. The Serb tired as the game went on and was wasteful with his passing and shooting.
Paul Pogba: 4/10
United's captain on the night displayed his extraordinary passing range once again and covered a lot of ground. But his extremely callous decision of putting a foot in at Matic's shot from close range denied United a legitimate goal as the midfielder was standing in an offside position. Yet to win a game when captaining the side.
Juan Mata: 7/10
Mata was United's most creative outlet going forward and looked as the only player who could have changed the scoreline. He delivered a pinpoint cross to Romelu Lukaku who headed it wide.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan: 3/10
Performances like this tell you why Jose Mourinho and Manchester United have lost faith in the Armenian. After receiving a league start in months, Mkhitaryan failed to do anything meaningful and was extremely erratic. He showed poor decision making throughout his time on the field.
Jesse Lingard: 6/10
Lingard was lively on the night and should have won a penalty for his side. His passing was below par on the night. Lingard could have continued his goalscoring streak but headed his effort wide.
Romelu Lukaku: N/A
Lukaku spurned a great chance early on but had to be taken off after 14 minutes as he suffered a clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt.
Substitutions
Marcus Rashford: 5/10
Rashford seems to be low on confidence at the moment which was reflected by his profligacy in front of goal. He was brilliant in beating his man but failed to have a meaningful effort on goal.
Anthony Martial: 6/10
Martial took the game to Southampton as soon as he arrived and won a freekick with his first contribution on the night. One of the very few players in this United side who look like the real deal.
