Matic played higher up the pitch!
Quite surprisingly, Mourinho put out United with Matic higher up in the pitch, and Fellaini shielding the defence. Matic did lend out a hand every time United were under pressure, but in a refreshing change, also joined in the United attack regularly.

With Pogba not having the best of games, it was Matic who ensured that United did not suffer. The Serbian used his brilliant left foot to spray the ball, opened up spaces for the front three and brought the fullbacks into the game.
His excellent reading of the game ensured that whenever United were caught out, Matic was doing the cleaning up higher up the pitch. He shielded the ball very well and kept the ball moving and even affected the game from around the penalty box.

Contrary to his normal style of play, Matic regularly ran in to join the attack. He was even in the penalty box once, attempting a cross. The Serb was back to his usual position after Rashford got his marching orders and he did very well to shield his defence until the end of the game.
Matic showed the United fans a fascinating new aspect of his game and he definitely should do this more often!

Inspired by Diego Maradona, Deepungsu played as an attacking midfielder for his local club at subdivision level in his initial years and scored an important goal or two. However, his all-time favorite footballer is Lionel Messi, and evidently, he feels Argentina's glory in 2022 is his favorite FIFA World Cup moment for fulfilling his long-standing dream. He is also an ardent East Bengal fan.
Deepungsu has been a Manchester United supporter since the year 2000. Unsurprisingly, his favorite manager is Sir Alex Ferguson and the Scotsman helped him get through some of the toughest days of his life. Despite believing in Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland to create an iconic rivalry, Deepungsu reckons no one can match the longevity of Messi and Ronaldo. He spends his leisure time writing about life on his blog, reading books, and playing the guitar.
