Paul Pogba continued his good form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as United made it three out of three wins under the Norwegian boss. While Pogba's first was a close-range finish after an exceptional run by Rashford, his second goal came via a header to take his tally to four goals and two assists in the last three games.
Rashford scored the third and the substitute Lukaku added the fourth goal for the Red Devils. Bournemouth lacked ideas and their away form has been dismal in the past couple of months. Though they scored a goal in the dying moment of the 1st half, they never looked like a team who can beat the surging United.
It was not all rosy for United though as Eric Bailly received red-card for a late challenge on Ryan Fraser. Nevertheless, fans are pretty happy and it was evident from the noise at the Old Trafford.
Here are the three reasons why United came out as easy winners in this fixture.
#1 Paul Pogba’s impressive run of form under the new boss
The French International struggled to play under Mourinho because of Portuguese's defensive style of play. Before Mourinho's sacking, Pogba was benched for a string of matches due to his poor form.
However, things have changed drastically at United under the new caretaker boss. The midfielder looks more comfortable with the ball, taking breathtaking runs instilling fear in the opposition’s mind.
He is getting more and more involved in the attacking third. He has been able to connect well with Rashford and Lingard, something which United failed to achieve under Mourinho. Pogba is playing in an advanced role which is helping him to dictate the attacking third.
The midfielder has been involved in seven of the 12 goals United has scored under Ole. Though United have not faced a strong opposition under Ole yet, the initial signs are good for the former Premier League champion.
#2 Bournemouth’s below-average defending
The start of the 2018-19 season was exceptional for Eddie Howe’s men as they were constantly hovering in the top half of the Premier League table. However, they lost steam since November as they could win just two out of 11 fixtures in the past two months. The growing injuries and poor form have hampered their good start.
Their slide has matched with a sequence of severe injuries to many of their vital players, with their captain Simon Francis the latest to be ruled out for months.
However, there is no excuse for their defensive frailties in the last game. While the left-back failed to block Rashford from running into the box to provide an assist for the 1st goal, Pogba was completely left unmarked for the 2nd goal.
Howe would be hoping to bring some defensive stability into the team during the winter transfer window.
#3 United's Free-Flowing football under Solskjaer
The Norwegian's philosophy of attacking football has brought back positivity and joy at Old Trafford. While players are in a positive mindset, fans are enjoying the Norwegian's football philosophy.
Players are not tracking back unnecessarily and they are staying in positions where they can receive the ball for a quick counter-attack.
The on and off the ball movement of players doesn’t look labored anymore as Ole has given the freedom to players to express themselves on the field. Fellaini, who had become the symbol of the team’s playing style under the former manager, is no more the Plan B.
Lukaku, who came as a substitute, enjoyed his brief spell as he scored the final goal to seal the game for United.
Can the Norwegian bring out the best in Alexis Sanchez too? The next few games will give us that answer.
