Adnan Januzaj nominated for BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award

Adnan Januzaj has been nominated as one of the ten contenders for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award. Januzaj will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of team mate Wayne Rooney who was the winner of the award in 2002.

Januzaj, winner of United’sReserve Team Player of the Year last year, will be facing off against other young achievers like Skeet shooter Amber Hill who became the youngest winner of the senior world cup in shooting, Rebekah Tyler who won the European Youth Champion in +63kg category in weight lifting creating new European and British records in the process and Dina Asher-Smith, who became the second youngest female athlete in history to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships when she helped Great Britain’s women secure bronze in the 4x100m relay.

The other contenders for the award are:

  • James Guy – Youngest male swimmer to compete for British senior swimming team in over 20 years.
  • Charley Hull – Youngest golfer to appear for Europe or USA in Solheim cup and helped Europe defeat the USA for the first time on American soil.
  • Jessica Judd – Youngest ever athlete to represent Britain in 800m at world championships.
  • Amy Marren – Won Gold in 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley and silver medals in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke at the IPC swimming world championships.
  • Isaac Towers – Won the wheel chair athletics in his age-group at the London Mini-Marathon in April.In June, he won the 400m and 800m at the England Athletics Senior/U20 Combined Events before breaking the senior European 1500m record. Isaac has broken every national T34 age group record from 100m to 5000m and is already considered one of the best wheel chair racers in the world.

Kimberly Woods – Won Gold in Canoe Slalom at the C1W Senior World Cup, two bronze medals at the C1W Senior World Cup, C1W Junior European gold, K1W Junior World silver, and the K1W Junior European Team silver; as well as being a C1W Senior World and European finalist and a C1W and K1W Senior World Championship team member.

Previous winners of the award include Arsenal‘s Theo Walcott and Wimbledon winner Andy Murray.
