Manchester United have reportedly agreed to sign Brazilian midfielder Roberto Firmino from Hoffenheim for a bargain price of £13.1 million. The 23-year-old has been linked to Manchester United’s rivals, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea as well.
The 23-year-old had a good Bundesliga season which saw him scoring 10 goals and providing 12 assists, but his efforts were not enough to take Hoffenheim to Europe as they ended at the season in eighth place in the Bundesliga. But his good form helped him to get into the Brazil squad, and he has scored three goals for them in six matches. He is also expected to start for Brazil at the Copa America in Chile.
Firmino played as a number 10 at Hoffenheim
He mostly plays as a ‘number 10’ for Hoffenheim and that is where he is the most dangerous at scoring 6 goals and setting up 9 as well. He can play on the left as well, but not with the same effect. His playing style would complement the likes of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera as he likes to play short passes and lay offs. Like most Brazilian attacking players, he can dribble the ball well and also contributes defensively.
He has been linked with move for the past few seasons but signed a new contract with Hoffenheim last year which had extended his contract up to 2017. But without European football it would be difficult for them to hold on to him.
If Manchester United signs him for £13.1 million, it would be a bargain as he is valued at around £25 million and he is just 23 years old. This would be their second signing of the summer after Memphis Depay was signed in May.
Manchester United are also reported to be interested in the likes of Harry Kane, Nicolas Otamendi, Ilkay Gundogan and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
