Manchester United tried, unsuccessfully, to buy Sami Khedira from Real Madrid and Wesley Sneijder from Galatasaray, according to ESPN.
This news comes after the conclusion of a tough transfer window as they failed to convince Barcelona‘s Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara to continue their careers at Old Trafford while their attempt to sign Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao on deadline day didn’t work out.
The Manchester outfit were also snubbed my Mesut Özil, who joined Premier League rivals Arsenal.
United ended up signing Marouane Fellaini from Everton on deadline day but were unable to convince the Toffees to let go of Leighton Baines, making Fellaini the only addition to The Red Devils’ senior squad in the summer transfer window.
Sami Khedira confirmed that Manchester United lodged a £34 million bid for him, but the advance was rejected outright by Real Madrid and the matter stopped there, as the Spanish giants wanted to keep him at the club.
“The club turned down the offer and that was it,” the 26-year-old said a press conference for the German national team in Munich on Tuesday. “We didn’t really have the chance to discuss it. I had a longer chat with Carlo Ancelotti a few weeks ago, and it was relatively clear to me that I’d stay at Real.”
Meanwhile, Galatasaray’s sporting coordinator Bulunt Tulun spoke of Manchester United lodging a bid for midfielder Wesley Sneijder, 29.
“Sneijder received an indirect offer from Manchester United two weeks ago but it was not accepted,” Tulun told Milliyet.
“There are several clubs that want him but just like we can’t let go of [striker] Burak [Yilmaz] we also have to keep hold of Sneijder.”
Sneijder was previously linked with a move to Manchester United when he was at Inter Milan and Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm at Old Trafford.
