New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has asked Luke Shaw to train separately to help regain his fitness because he is “not fit”.
The Dutch manager has devised a special programme to help him reach the required fitness levels. Shaw was training separately when the squad trained in Washington ahead of their next pre-season match against Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup.
The 19-year-old was seen making runs up and down the left flank after which he was asked to put in crosses into the area.
But he left back was not to be seen afterward as he was made to sit out for the rest of the training session.
When questioned about the decision, Van Gaal responded: “He is OK, but I am always a trainer-coach who sees individuals and what they need.”
Shaw needs to train till he is fit: Van Gaal
“He needs to be fit and is not very fit and fit enough to do what I want. He needs to train individually until he is fit.”
Questions were asked as to why he was unfit considering he had just been with the England squad at the World Cup less than a month earlier.
Van Gaal said; “I cannot judge that, but I see what I see. I have spoken with him and we have made a programme for him. He agreed with me,”
He was also not sure when Shaw would be ready to train with the rest of the squad again and that the decision would depend on Tony Strudwick, the fitness coach.
“How long? That we have to see, but that I don't know,”
“I have heard good messages from Strud (Tony Strudwick) but we have to see.”
