#1 Everton fail in their attempt to sign Marcos Rojo
Only yesterday, we revealed that Everton were interested in a loan deal for Chris Smalling, but United were not ready to sell the Englishman. However, United were looking to trim their squad this summer, especially since they now have 7 central defenders vying for 2 positions in the team.
Sky Sports initially reported that Everton were interested in signing Marcos Rojo on a permanent deal. With Kurt Zouma back to Chelsea after the completion of his loan spell and both Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka released this summer, the Toffees were a little short of personnel at the back.
And it looked like Marco Silva saw Rojo as the ideal replacement for the departing Zouma. Interestingly, Everton had tried to sign the Argentine last summer, but a deal never materialized.
Rojo arrived at Carrington on Thursday morning to talk with United representatives regarding his future. He heads into the new season with his position in the team uncertain after the arrival of Harry Maguire and as such, a move away did make sense. However, the deal failed to see light of the day as Everton could not match United's valuation of the player.
