Manchester United inquire about Juan Mata from Chelsea

Arsenal v Chelsea - Premier League

Juan Mata’s Stamford Bridge future is in doubt as Chelsea step up their interest in Anzhi’s Willian and Manchester United make their interest known

Sources from both Manchester United and Chelsea have told ESPN that United have made an informal inquiry for Chelsea’s attacking midfielder, Juan Mata.

It is yet to be determined if a Juan Mata move will be part of a deal which sees Wayne Rooney going to Chelsea from United, but all that has been confirmed is that Manchester United are interested and encouraged by the possibility of a deal.

Amidst much speculation, Chelsea have insisted all summer that Juan Mata is not for sale, as he is understood to be owner Roman Abramovich’s favourite player at Stamford Bridge.

It has been widely reported in the media, however, that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho would be happy to let go of the Spaniard if it meant strengthening elsewhere in the squad, especially up front.

Chelsea’s reported interest in Anzhi Makhachkala’s Willian may open the door to Mata’s exit, but it is all speculation at the moment.

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaka has also been mooted as a potential option in a player plus cash deal for Rooney, but the Belgian youngster remains highly unlikely to leave Stamford Bridge.

United’s stance on Rooney remains unchanged as they insist that the 27-year-old is not for sale.
