The ones that got away:
Manchester United were linked with a host of defenders since a center-back was, and still remains, a top priority at Old Trafford. However, the Red Devils failed to address the issue in January and lost out on two great center-halves who could have improved their backline
Toby Alderweireld
Toby Alderweireld was linked heavily with a move to Manchester United given his contract that was due to expire at the end of this season.
Tottenham, however, succeeded in triggering the one-year extension in his contract and tying him down until 2020. His release clause is now set to £25m following the extension, which means Tottenham will lose him for a very minimal fee if they don't persuade him to stay for the long term.
Kalidou Koulibaly
Kalidou Koulibaly was yet another defender heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, but the mammoth asking price of Napoli put the deal off.
United matched Napoli's initial asking price of £90m, but the Partenopei upped the demand to £108m, thereby putting United off the radar.
However, the Red Devils haven't yet given up on Koulibaly and are expected to return for him in the summer transfer season. They might face stiff competition from Real Madrid for the center-back's signature.
