Memphis Depay has been linked to several clubs this year, but it seems that Manchester United are in lead position to sign the Netherlands youngster. Depay might be inclined to sign for Manchester United at the end of the season, as Louis van Gaal is a coach who he has worked with before.
Although United’s league rival Liverpool are also interested in the player, the prospect of Champions League football might persuade the 21-year-old to land up at Old Trafford. Although Liverpool could still qualify for the Champions League, it seems highly unlikely as the team is seven points behind Manchester City.
Depay is estimated to cost £25 million, and this is not necessarily a problem for either team as they have the funds to go ahead with the deal.
Depay and Van Gaal
Van Gaal has worked with the 21-year old before during his time as the national team coach. The Dutchman gave Depay his debut two years ago, and selected him for the FIFA World Cup that took place in Brazil. The winger scored a memorable goal in the 3-2 win against Australia.
Depay scored 20 goals in 27 Eredivisie appearances for PSV this term, making him the top scorer in the Eredivisie.
Manchester United have signed several top class player from PSV before, with two of them being Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jaap Stam.
The former Holland midfielder Ronald de Boer felt Van Gaal had the best chance of signing the player.
“I don’t want to say which club is more suitable for him, but if he goes to United he knows there is a Dutch coach there who knows him from the World Cup. That is an advantage,” he told Talksport.
