What's the rumour?
Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea have all been linked with making a move for Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski and now latest reports from ESPN journalist Mark Lovell (via the Express) claim that the Red Devils are the only side who have formally enquired for the Polish superstar so far.
Real Madrid have also long been credited with an interest in the Bayern Munich target man, but earlier this month, former Real Madrid player Christoph Metzelder said that it would be a difficult task to sign Lewandowski.
“There isn't a pain barrier [on the transfer fee] because a Robert Lewandowski is irreplaceable,” he said.
"There isn't an adequate replacement available on the market. Therefore, they will not allow him to leave. Normally, Bayern do not give up their top players and they do not need the money."
In case you didn't know...
One of the best strikers in world football at the moment, Robert Lewandowski has been on fire for Bayern Munich this season and is unsurprisingly the leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga this season.
With 23 goals in 24 league appearances, the Polish superstar has been breaking scoring records for fun and it will be interesting to see where he will be plying his trade next season.

The heart of the matter
Manchester United might have the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to choose from in attack, but it seems that the Red Devils are determined to further strengthen their attack by signing the prolific Bayern Munich striker.
On the other hand, Real Madrid who have also been heavily linked with the forward are reportedly keen on a replacement for Karim Benzema and they will have to act quickly if they want to sign Lewandowski ahead of Manchester United.

Manchester United definitely have the financial ability and might to make a bid for the Bayern Munich man and it will come as no surprise to anyone if what Mark Covell learnt from Kicker turns out to be true.

Wow! Lewandowski will surely be a valuable asset to any team in the world.
Author's take
While Manchester United have reportedly already made a formal offer, the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid arguably need the services of the 29-year-old striker more than the Red Devils.
Physically fit and a supreme goalscorer, Lewandowski's future might just turn out to be the biggest saga of the summer transfer window.
