What's the news?
The former Arsenal midfielder, Paul Merson insists that he would be surprised if the Red Devils did not appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager if they beat Liverpool next weekend.
In case you didn't know...
Eyebrows were raised when Manchester United appointed Ole Gunnar Solksjaer as their caretaker manager for rest of the season back in December.
However, he shut down his critics with his excellent work and the Red Devils are playing some excellent football under his guidance. United are currently unbeaten in the league since his arrival and the 'top-four' looks like a highly likely possibility now.
Nevertheless, there are still question marks on his long term future at the club and the United boardroom are yet to make a decision about giving him a permanent job.
The heart of the matter
Paul Merson praises Ole Gunnar Solkjaer for his brilliant work and suggests that the Manchester United board should appoint him as their permanent manager if they manage to beat Liverpool on February 24.
He said: "To bounce back like that, I see them going into this game on Sunday with every chance of beating Liverpool. I think if Liverpool come away with anything, it's a good result. That tells me Ole is doing something right at the moment."
"If they beat Liverpool, I'd be shocked if he didn't get it then."
"That place was going absolutely nowhere three or four months ago. They're getting ripped to shreds by PSG at the end of the game, and Ole still has 60,000 people singing his name."
He further added:
"If you're the owner, you're sitting there thinking: 'How great is this?' Three or four months ago, it would have been toxic.
"Watching Monday's game I'd be shocked if they didn't get in the top four, and I think that's as big as winning the FA Cup because they looked a million miles off it. This is the biggest club in the world in my opinion, and they need to be in the Champions League."
What's next?
Manchester United are currently unbeaten in the league under Solskjaer and will be looking forward to extending their run when they face Liverpool on February 24.
