Manchester United news: Paul Scholes wants the club to buy Pogba, Varane and Modric

Manchester United have had a poor season so far with many of their players not performing to the level expected of them. Louis Van Gaal has spent a lot on bringing in new players over the last two seasons but the investment hasn’t paid dividends.

Paul Scholes who has been a fierce critic of his old club this season has not been impressed with the quality of recruitment calling for changes to be made in the summer. The former midfielder has given his opinion as well, marking out three players in particular that he would like to see brought in.

His first choice was Real Madrid’s playmaker. “I’d like Luka Modric,” he said in an interview with United We Stand Fanzine. “How old is he now? Might be a bit too old, but he’s a great player.”

Modric has been a consistent performer for Los Blancos and has been one of their important players in midfield this season. But his availability is a huge question mark considering how good he has been for the capital club.

Scholes’ next choice is also a Real Madrid player but this time, the Englishman was more realistic over the chances of the move saying, “I like Raphael Varane. I said realistic and I’m picking Real Madrid players?”

United have lacked a premium goalscorer as well this season but considering the lack of availability of good strikers in the market he went for a former academy product. “We probably need a centre-forward but there’s not too many of them about so I’m going to say I’d like us to bring Paul Pogba back”

Pogba was named in the FIFA World XI for the first time this year and his stock has risen dramatically over the last few years. The midfielder famously left United for nothing as a teenager and joined Juventus in 2012. With United short on quality in the centre of the pitch, Pogba will add that X-factor they so desperately need.

Scholes not impressed with Anfield performance

United slumped to a defeat against Liverpool in their first leg Europa league tie last week. The team were lucky enough to escape with a 2-0 scoreline after David De Gea made several impressive saves.

And the former heartbeat of the United midfield was less than impressed with the team's performance.”They were a shambles,” he said on BT Sport, “The lack of quality and fight...when you are United, there are certain standards you have to be at, and they haven’t made them.”

The Red Devils will welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford this week as they attempt to overturn their first leg deficit.
