Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Patrice Evra for helping Ashley Young to settle at the club following a big money transfer from Aston Villa.
Young, who joined United in this summer’s transfer window, has gelled along nicely with his teammates and his coordination on the left wing with fullback Patrice Evra hasn’t got unnoticed. Young scored a brace against Arsenal in the 8-2 win over the Gunners and has been busy providing assists since the beginning of the season.
Many credited his transition to his partnership with Wayne Rooney on the international scene. But Sir Alex said in a press conference that it was Evra’s knowledge of the game that helped Young settle.
“Some players come to a club like ours and find it difficult to settle in but Ashley has done exceptionally well. He is versatile and has a good understanding of the game. He is getting great support from Evra on the left-hand side. The great experience Patrice brings is very important for a player coming to our club.”
A youth product at Watford, Young made over 100 appearances for the Hornets before shifting to Aston Villa in the beginning of the 2007-08 season. It was under manager Martin O’Neil at Villa that Young emerged as a leading assist provider in the league.
However, Sir Alex revealed that he tried to sign Young from his Watford days and has been keeping an eye on his progress.
“We tried to get him when he was at Watford but were just a bit late. He has matured at Aston Villa and his form last season was fantastic considering they had a difficult year. Since he has come to us, he has taken the challenge very well.”
