Wesley Sneijder to Manchester United is the failed transfer that was most talked about this summer. To several United fans, Sneijder is a target that ‘got away’, one whom the club might continue to pursue perhaps in January in order to fill the void of retired midfield maestro Paul Scholes. Considered to be one of the best midfielders in the world currently, Sneijder was likened by many as the man who possessed Scholes’ vision and passing range and could succeed the Englishman at United. But some fans and critics have been hell bent right from the start upon the theory that the Dutchman would be a misfit at the club, given that his natural position clashes with that of club favourite Wayne Rooney, who operates in the hole as a supporting striker pulling the strings freely while in attack.
Now that the transfer window is officially shut closed, interesting revelations on the saga have emerged from both camps. First it was Sneijder who revealed that he believed he was never going to leave Inter. Now Sir Alex Ferguson has come out to reiterate what he has been saying all summer: Sneijder can never be the replacement to Paul Scholes, thus making it a victory for the anti-Sneijder camp at Manchester United.
“Sneijder is not the ideal replacement for Scholes. He’s a fantastic player but he was not who we were looking for to replace Scholes. Only Xavi and Iniesta are comparable to Scholes.”
It certainly looks like the end of this saga given that Sir Alex Ferguson has poured cold water over any lingering speculation that United could return for a bid for the Inter man in the next transfer window.
