Roy Hodgson is set to give Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney a chance to shine in his preferred number 10 role for England, according to the Guardian.
Rooney has come under scrutiny for his role in the England team, with many believing he should not be a guaranteed starter, particularly after his performance against Italy in England’s World Cup opener.
The Manchester United striker has failed to recreate his club form on the international stage for England in recent years and the home faithful are finally starting to take notice. Despite assisting Sturridge for England’s goal in Manaus, Rooney has been lambasted by many.
However, some have stood up for the United man, including Rene Meulensteen, insisting being deployed out wide on the left has not helped the former Everton man. However, according to the Guardian, Rooney is to be given a role in the number 10 position come Thursday when Hodgson’s men face Uruguay in the second game of Group D.
Rooney reportedly filled the role in a high intensity training session and that has pointed to suggestions that Hodgson will utilise the striker in that position come Thursday evening.
