Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell has told Sky Sports that he hopes that his experiences of European football with Wigan will hold him in good stead on his return to Manchester. The former Crewe youngster is on loan at the DW Stadium, and hopes that his goal scoring exploits in Europe can help him to nail down a regular place at his parent club.
Powell admitted that his form has been mixed so far, but blames that on a lack of match fitness.
“My overall assessment of my time with Wigan would be average so far – I’ve had a couple of good games, a couple of bad ones and a couple that have been all right,”
“I’m still getting my fitness back and I need to get my sharpness.”
He spoke of his aims for his loan spell, before continuing on the subject of the experience of playing European football for the Latics.
“I’ve come on loan to get games and I’m happy to be doing that and contributing to the team.”
“I’ve managed to get my goals in Europe rather than the league and I think I need to start scoring in the league because we are not getting the points we need.
“But it (Europe) helps me especially considering United are in Europe.”
The ambitious youngster has scored three goals in three European games for Owen Coyle’s side, and hopes that he can repeat that experience for United.
“Hopefully I will get back to United playing in Europe. Everyone wants to play in Europe, whether it’s the Europa League or Champions League.”
Powell is the highest scoring Manchester United player in Europe this season, with three goals in three games, albeit for Wigan.
