Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed his ambition to captain his club and England one day.

Rooney, 28, was handed a huge £300,000 per week contract extension at United earlier this season with supposed promises that he would be handed the captaincy when Nemanja Vidic left in the summer.

After plenty of speculation surrounding this particular clause in his new deal, Rooney has finally confirmed his intentions to one day captain Man United and also his country.

“I’ve captained a few times for United and if the manager wants me to be captain, I’d have no problem with that,” Rooney told club magazine Inside United. “I’d grab it with both hands.

“It’d be a great honour to captain my country but, again, it’s the manager’s call and I’m sure he’ll have a few contenders.

“You don’t know what Steven is going to do in the summer, only he knows.”

Should David Moyes hand Rooney the armband it would signal a complete turnaround for Rooney at the club, who apparently tried to force through a move to Chelsea last summer after falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rooney has been United’s most effective player in the final third this season, scoring 11 goals and creating 48 chances.
