Manchester United’s latest signing Memphis Depay has said that he was told by the English club not to play the final two matches for PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie for fear of injuries. He also said that PSV too wanted him to sit out those two matches.
United didn’t want their new signing to play the last couple of matches after his signing was announced, so as to ensure that he doesn’t get injured. The Premier League giants signed him for a fee around £25 million at the beginning of May.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, the Dutch winger said, “I really wanted to play and for our coach [Phillip Cocu] it was not a big issue. But PSV and Manchester United were not pleased. They both suggested that I sit out because of fear over injuries.”
The former PSV Eindhoven stalwart wanted to play both games because he had a chance to finish as top goalscorer in the Eredivisie and PSV could have finished with a record points tally, and incidentally, he was able to achieve both those objectives.
