After just a season of his arrival in England, Bastian Schweinsteiger has been told by Jose Mourinho that he does not feature in his plans. Even more surprising is the price at which United have decided to offload the German veteran.
Jose Mourinho has set a meagre £2 million price for the World Cup winner as the new manager does not want to hinder any youngster's chance to get into the first team because of the fringe players.
After arriving from Bayern Munich amidst much fanfare for around £7 million, Schweinsteiger never looked at peace in England. Injuries made it worse for the German as he could manage only 31 appearances in his first season at Old Trafford under his former coach, Louis Van Gaal.
His influence on the field has diminished with his growing age as the 32-year-old could not bring his midfield stability from Germany to England.
Jose Mourinho is set to clear the dead wood at the club as he looks to keep a relatively smaller squad for his first season. With a host of youngsters being sent on loan this summer, it is the time for the likes of Ashley Young, Phil Jones and Bastian Schweinsteiger to be sold to get them off United's monstrous wage bill.
If the German is offloaded in the coming week, it will clear a massive £190,000 per week off United's bill which was the weekly wage structure for Schweinsteiger.
Schweinsteiger has been made to train with the reserves at United's Carrington training ground and reportedly Mourinho has even made him empty his club locker. This was considered as an insult from the German's family as his brother vented it out on twitter saying that the club lacked respect on how to treat a veteran.
Schweinsteiger can be said to be Mourinho's first top class victim at his new club, which has been the case wherever the Portuguese has set foot.
Schweinsteiger's huge salary is proving to be a roadblock for his suitors as not many clubs can afford a player of his stature. Juventus seem to be interested in the German but he is seen as a second option to their main midfield target, Blaise Matuidi.
Celtic were also rumoured to be in for the 32-year-old, but manager Brendan Rodgers was quick to dismiss that by saying, "I can get you a marquee signing but they’ve got to be able to press and they’ve got to be able to run.”
