Things have not turned out all so well for Memphis Depay since he joined Manchester United for £25 million from the Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven this summer. The Dutch star scored 22 goals in 30 outings for his former club before clinching a move to United.
Memphis started well for the Red Devils, scoring two sublime goals against Club Brugge in the Champions League qualifying match. But a dip in form has seen the 21-year-old’s demoted to the bench. Depay has started just one of the last six United matches.
The wide man admitted his woes at Old Trafford recently, saying on Man Utd’s official site, “It’s of course difficult when you’re on the bench, but it’s going better right now and it’s also going better on the training pitch. So if I get my chance to play, I will take it.
“I think lots of things changed. I'm in a new club right now, it's a different level. Such things are playing a big role and you're trying to find your way and it was a bit easy at the start but then I fell back and you could see it in the way I played. But you can assume that I’m busy with working on that and getting back to the top.
“I feel fit and I’m trying to show on the training ground that I’m doing my best to perform well. People are used to see me score and that shall also come, it just takes a bit longer now, but you’ll have to find that form again.”
Depay has gained five kilos since joining United
The United winger is keen to turn things around for himself and improve his performances in the Premier League. Memphis has revealed he has got a personal chef and has also explained his weight gain. He told Telegraaf, “I get to eat well at home. It is cooked for me. I have my own cook.
“People do not know what I have to do to be fit. Perhaps there is a picture that I’m not doing that, but that’s nonsense. Since I joined Manchester United I’ve gained five kilos. And that’s not fat, only muscle mass. It’s pretty bizarre. It’s also due to the heavy rhythm in England. I now weigh 85 kilos.
“When I stood on the scales first I thought, ‘OK, do you?’ My body is still developing. Now I’m a little heavier. I work a lot on my co-ordination and starting speed.”
