Manchester United/Liverpool injury updates: Cleverley out for several weeks, Johnson returns to training

Tom Cleverley in action against Sunderland

Here is the roundup of the latest news across the physio-room’s of Manchester United and Chelsea.

Manchester United Updates:

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley pulled out of the England squad during their World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland with a calf strain. After initial suggestions that the England International may be sidelined for two weeks, it is now reported that he may be sideline for a longer time.

Having reported back to United’s own doctors at their Carrington training base, the Red Devils fear he could be facing a longer spell on the sidelines. The midfielder is not a stranger to calf problems. He has suffered an extended period on the sidelines 18 months ago, and is scheduled to undergo further scans to see if there is a serious problem.

Meanwhile Marouane Fellaini’s injury to his wrist was not bad as it sounded earlier and is expected to play this weekend during United’s clash against Southampton. Physioroom.com also reports that defenders Rafael and Ferdinand might return this Saturday.

Liverpool Updates:

Glen Johnson

The Reds have received a major injury boost ahead of their trip to Newcastle United as defender Glen Johnson returned to first team training. The England International has been out of the game for almost a month now when he limped off the ground during their clash against Manchester United in September.

The Mirror reports that Johnson if everything goes according to the plan could see some gametime this weekend.

“Glen is the type of player you don’t realise what you’re missing until he’s not in the team,” he said.

“He was outstanding against Manchester United so it will be great when we get him back. He’s got the cast off his foot now and he’s working hard to be back in the next few weeks.” said Brendan Rodgers.

In other news, midfielder Joe Allen feels that he is back to full fitness and is expecting to be included in the Reds squad during their Newcastle clash this weekend.

“The plan is to get back into training, get a good few days leading up to the Newcastle game and hopefully I’ll be available for selection from there on. It has been a bit of a frustrating time – it always is when you’re injured – but I’m finally getting there,” Allen told the Post.
