Manchester United's Phil Jones reveals his most "comfortable" playing position

Manchester United's Phil Jones ready to step up for club & country

Phil Jones has revealed just how determined he is to nail down a starting position at the centre of the Manchester United and England defence.

The former Blackburn powerhouse has been used in several different positions throughout his short career, but doesn’t want this trend to continue as he looks to justify the compliments Sir Alex Ferguson paid him at the end of last season. Fergie stated that Jones, still only 21, could go on to become one of the club’s best ever players, comments that will stick with the England international throughout his career.

“It’s something I won’t forget. I’d love to live up to it, of course I would. But if I can be half as good as some of the great players from this club’s history, do half the things some of those guys did, then I’ll be able to say at the end of my career that I’ve had a good one.” said Jones when talking to The Sun regarding Ferguson’s comments.

The defenders form may have dropped a little last season, but this term has seen him look more menacing than ever as he marauds around the pitch like a possessed man. He’s noticed a rise in his own form and puts it down to featuring more frequently in the position he knows best: centre-back.

“I’m happy with my own form. I’m pleased to be getting a bit of a run at centre-half.

“It’s always nice to play in the position you feel most comfortable in. I played in midfield against Norwich in the Capital One Cup, but mostly it has been centre-back and that’s where I want to be.” said Jones.

With 8 caps to his name at international level, Jones feels adding to this haul is the next step after becoming a regular for his club. However, he knows there is heavy competition for places in the national team and will have to show just what he can bring to the table if he is to be on the plane to Brazil next summer.

“England? There’s a lot of competition. Some top centre-halves, midfielders.

“It’s going to be difficult for me to push my way into the team. But, hopefully, I can force my way on to the plane.”

“There’s a good little group of us from United, six or seven of us. It can only help England if we are playing together.”

With the aging pair of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand in the twilight of their careers, it seems Jones is coming into a rich vein of form at just the right time and could go on to live up to the hype bestowed upon him by arguably the greatest manager of all time.

Out of the 5 games where Phil Jones has played at centre-back for Manchester United in the Premier League, they have won 4 and drawn 1.
