The title is wrapped up; a guard of honour will be provided. United, on the face of it, have nothing much to play for. Of course, there is the small matter of the record points tally, but that is merely a side-plot. Arsenal, on the other hand, are currently in third position with 63 points, one ahead of Chelsea and two ahead of Tottenham, both having a game in hand. This game, thus, is of paramount significance to Arsenal’s Champions League ambitions.
Sir Alex Ferguson has stressed that the squad will be fully utilised in the remaining games, with the players who believe that they haven’t gotten the chances that they deserve, getting a chance to prove what they are made of.
David De Gea, after an unsure start to the season, has pretty much made the number one spot his own. However, Lindegaard has only 8 Premier League appearances to his credit and requires two more to be eligible for a medal. Will Sir Alex start with Anders in place of De Gea? My feeling: unlikely. De Gea will keep in the next two games while Lindegaard will be in goal for the two after that.
On Monday, Evans and Jones were the pairing at centre-back. This, for sure, will not be the case against Arsenal. It will, almost certainly, be the turn of Rio and Vidic to be paired at the centre again. At right back, Rafael may well get a most well-deserved rest with Smalling filling in for him. On the left, the ever-present Evra looks likely to continue but expect Buttner to start at least one game from now until the end of the season.
In midfield, Cleverley looks set to start for the champions but who will play alongside him, will be the question. Will it be Carrick who will not be given a rest, or will it be Phil Jones? Sir Alex might even consider Anderson or maybe even continue with the Rooney experiment. On the flanks, it looks like Welbeck and maybe Nani will start. In my view, the midfield will be: Welbeck, Nani, Rooney, Cleverley.
Up top, it looks like it will be Chicharito who will get the nod to partner van Persie.
Sir Alex’s side might not have much other than records to play for, but they know that they are in a position to affect who gets into the Champions League and who does not. Hence, Sir Alex will be mindful of the fact that he can take no chances against a charged-up Arsenal team who will be smarting, especially after having to give a guard of honour to their bitter rivals before the start of the game.
Who do you think will start?
