Mano Menezes quits as Flamengo coach after loss

Rio de Janeiro - Mano Menezes has quit as coach of Brazilian football club Flamengo following its 2-4 loss to Atletico Paranaense.

The former Brazil coach made the shock announcement during his post-match press conference at the Maracana stadium on Thursday, reports Xinhua.

“We are going to talk about something a little bit different because I have just had a meeting with everybody and informed that I am no longer coach of Flamengo,” Menezes said.

“First I spoke with (executive director) Paulo Pelaipe and then with the entire group.

“We were ending a cycle of four months since I began and I felt that, looking at today’s performance, I wasn’t able to pass on what I think about football.”

Thursday’s result left Flamengo 15th in the Brasileirao standings, just two points clear of the relegation zone with 16 matches remaining.

Menezes, who replaced 1994 World Cup winner Jorginho as ‘Rubro-negro’ boss in June, took charge of Flamengo 21 times for eight victories, six draws and seven losses.

He was sacked as coach of Brazil last November after more than two years in charge.
