Diego Armando Maradona arrived in Dubai late on Wednesday to formally take charge of the city based Al Wasl club. Maradona will begin his tenure as the head Coach of the seven times league champions after he parted ways with the Argentine national team following the early World Cup exit last year.
Maradona who arrived late, with the training season having already begun a couple of weeks ago, will catch up with his coaching staff to access the teams development and to discuss how to take forward from here. The football legend will also have a meeting with the club officials on various issues including the signing of a player to fill the fourth foreigner quota.
The club has so far sign three foreigners; the latest being Juan Manuel of Uruguay who signed a one year contract on Tuesday following his move from Atletico Penarol. Another South American, Edson Puch-the Chilean attacking midfielder has also been included in their squad along with Omani defender, Mohammad Al Shaiba to complete the foreigners’ quota.
Al Wasl stunned the World in May when they appointed Maradona as their new Chief Coach with the 50 year old officially unveiled to the local and international media on June 4. The all time best footballer then spend some time in the city of Abu Dhabi to understand and absorb the lifestyle of the city and his would be new home.
With this Maradona’s second innings as a coach begin’s and the world will look up to his performance as to how he takes the club ahead. The question will once again arise whether the world’s best footballer can become a good coach specially after he was criticize following Argentina’s failure in the last year World Cup.
